This means that Paul was highlighting the manner in which a woman taught—that is, a woman was not to teach in a domineering way (cf. the TNIV footnote). Evangelical scholarship has been largely dependent on Knight’s study for its understanding of authentein and his translation of authentekotos pros auton as, “I exercised authority over him” (1984:145).
